Also known as: RT, industrial radiography, X-ray inspection, gamma radiography.
How it works
Radiation attenuates as it passes through material; where there is less material (a void or crack aligned with the beam) more radiation reaches the detector and the image is darker. The radiograph is a permanent record that shows the shape and distribution of volumetric flaws. Density, sensitivity and geometric unsharpness are controlled by exposure parameters and checked with IQIs and densitometers.
Where it is used
Butt welds in pipelines and pressure equipment, castings, and any application where a permanent image is required by the code or the client. Radiography needs exclusion zones and shift work, which is why phased array UT is increasingly accepted as an alternative for welds.
RT in AMPS
Radiographer licences, dosimetry records and source or equipment certificates are tracked on the AMPS personnel and equipment pages with expiry flags. In AMPS, reports are produced from your own Microsoft Word templates through the template engine: job data such as the client, purchase order number, equipment serial numbers, location and dates is filled in automatically, an AI assistant can tidy the wording, the report can be signed in AMPS, and the finished Word file is saved in the job’s report folder in your OneDrive, SharePoint or Google Drive.
