AS/NZS 1554 Structural steel welding

AS/NZS 1554 is the joint Australian/New Zealand standard series for structural steel welding; Part 1 covers welding of steel structures and defines weld categories SP (structural purpose) and GP (general purpose), with inspection and NDT requirements, and further parts cover stud welding, reinforcing steel, high-strength steels, fatigue-loaded structures, stainless steel and sheet steel.

Also known as: AS/NZS 1554.1, AS 1554, SP and GP weld categories.

Why it matters locally

Most structural steel fabrication and site welding in Australia and New Zealand is inspected to AS/NZS 1554, so weld inspection reports quote the part, the weld category and the clause. Fabricators’ quality systems and the inspection company’s procedures both reference it.
